Joana Maia is a general practitioner and clinical psychologist with dual qualifications and a PhD (MD, PhD). She sees children from birth, adolescents, adults and entire families. Fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish. French and Italian — conversational

About the Doctor

Dr. Maia holds two full professional qualifications — general medicine and clinical psychology — together with a PhD in developmental psychology. This means that many concerns which usually require multiple referrals in conventional care — "first to the GP, then to a psychologist, then to a sleep specialist" — can be addressed in a single consultation, holistically and without losing time.

Anxiety, insomnia, chronic fatigue, psychosomatic complaints, work stress, eating concerns and chronic pain all benefit from both medical and psychological assessment. Working with these conditions as both physician and psychologist, Dr. Maia offers what is often called holistic or integrative medicine: a way of seeing the patient as a whole.

Before transitioning to primary care, Dr. Maia trained in anesthesiology, gaining strong skills in acute care, pain management and perioperative medicine. At UMC she sees patients in the clinic, online, and on home and hotel visits.

Additional training: Advanced Life Support (AHA/INEM), Pre-Critical Event Simulation in trauma and emergency medicine, Pediatric Emergency Bootcamp, Pre-Hospital Medical Emergency (INEM, 80 hours), Intensive Course in Pain Medicine (3M Initiative), Eco-guided Regional Anesthesia, DIR®/Floortime intervention, Circle of Security Early Intervention, Tavistock Infant Mental Health Program, Applied Behavior Analysis for autism.

Holistic Approach — Medicine and Psychology Combined

This is Dr. Maia's defining professional focus. Many concerns patients bring to a doctor have both a physical and an emotional dimension: anxiety affects sleep and digestion, chronic stress affects blood pressure and immunity, long-standing pain affects mood and quality of life. When medical and psychological assessment happen in the same consultation, the picture becomes more complete and the treatment plan more accurate. Where medication and tests are needed — they are prescribed. Where psychotherapy makes the difference — it is offered. And where both work best together — they are integrated.

Stress, Anxiety and Insomnia

A specific area of interest for Dr. Maia is the management of stress, anxiety disorders, insomnia and burnout. The approach is evidence-based: thorough assessment, ruling out medical causes, individually tailored plan — supportive medication when needed, psychotherapeutic techniques, sleep hygiene, habit work. The goal is not to suppress the symptom, but to understand its cause and sustainably improve quality of life.

Dr. Maia provides home and hotel visits in Porto and the surrounding area. This is a convenient format for patients with small children, for elderly patients, for travelers staying in hotels, and for anyone who finds it difficult or inconvenient to come to the clinic.
